Minutes after posting a blog post about how much I love Cleveland, I get a parking ticket because I stupidly trusted the City parking lot attendee and parked in a loading zone to run into buy beer at Great Lakes Brewing. Let my guard down and I was played for 25 bucks.
Can’t get back into the U.S.A. because immigration and customs at Charlotte international airport doesn’t open until 1 p.m. This after our flight yesterday was canceled because plane needed new brakes.
95° in Chapel Hill. Another work day at the house, patio demolition and yard cleanup and more. Eager to live up here one day soon and enjoy the 4 acres of woods.
Back at my desk at Duke Dept of Medicine, after last week’s fun family reunion in Tennessee. Played soccer yesterday, had 2 toes broken. Won’t be able to take my daily walk across campus.
Final night of the family reunion, potluck at our cabin. Bob and Claire Gadbois are giving their presentation about solar eclipses - they’ve seen 4, and will be in Wyoming for the next in August. I’ll be in Aunt Linda’s yard in South Carolina for totality.
The family reunion has been fun, filled with conversations and activities, with many old memories now joined with new remembrances. Sure, one uncle broke a tooth, one brother smashed another’s bumper, other moments of tension were lamentable, but overall this has been a blast.
Uncle Larry and Uncle Michael charting our next hike. Gorgeous weather today, and thousands of people in the park. Thank you, American taxpayers.
Hiking with the family in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Road tripping to a big family reunion. Listened to the really good Magic Show episode of This American Life. Picnic lunch at Catawba County rest stop.
Oliver stands below his name in front of the Chapel Hill Public Library. He is participating in the summer reading contest.
Self diagnosing myself with iliopsoas bursitis from two years of marathon running and Sunday morning soccer fun.
Family movie night and we’re watching Jaws.
Been so busy of late that I haven’t check the Duke River of News (http://dukeriver.co), but it sure is flowing nicely today. Among the items is a post by my colleague with a roundup of faculty comments in tribute to our departing chair, now the dean of School of Medicine here at Duke.
Bought an old house on 4 acres in Chapel Hill, NC this morning. Walked the land tonight and found our first treasure among the trees and leaves.
