It’s time to start planning the annual trip to Levering Orchard in Ararat, Virginia, to pick sour cherries. One day only, have to be there when they open the gate, find a ladder and climb high and don’t come down until the tree is bare.
Cleaned out the flower garden with its iris and peony, added zinnia, rhubarb, dahlia, and cana. This garden is in a perfect spot, with sun and water. Great placement by the family who built the house more than 50 years ago. My wife came by to pick me up for dinner, brought me a cold Fullsteam brew. Can’t wait to move up there next month when reno is done.
At work, I’m standing up a pilot of the Voices of Duke Health listening booth and podcast project, and on Fridays I test my equipment, try my voice through the microphone, and record a short message as a way to start building my audio skills.
NPR has the story behind my favorite podcast of the last year, Ear Hustle. Great stories by inmates at San Quentin State Prison.
Thanks to Tom Michael, general manager of Boise State Public Radio (and my brother in law), for the link, and the 30 minutes he just gave me for a conversation about radio, podcasts, and ‘sense of place.’
A very tardy note of thanks to @manton for the ability to edit MB posts.
Podcast recommendation: the Seeing White season of Scene on Radio by veteran radio journalist John Biewen. Very enlightening and informative exploration of race, history, whiteness, and the ills of manifest destiny.
There’s a spiffy new website for The Monti, a storytelling organization here in North Carolina that celebrated 10 years of live storytelling with a splendid show last night. Kudos to Jeff Polish and the 1000 storytellers who have entertained us through the years.
Haven’t run or played soccer in two months now. Missing the Tar Heel 10 Miler tomorrow morning. Feeling very out of condition. Damn this sports hernia.
The Micro.blog community and conversations are reminding me of early days of blogging, and our BlogTogether meetups in Chapel Hill. Great to see ya’ll building tools, creating connections, exploring themes, and expressing yourselves on your spaces.
I’m listening to the excellent Scene on Radio podcast by John Biewen, and the Seeing White series is fascinating.
Stopped up to the house to check on the renovation. Stepped out of truck, and heard a woodpecker, crows, and a hawk all at once.
Dropped some dough on a couple of used lenses at the local camera shop.
The things you learn during a home renovation: schluter, that shiny strip along the edge of the shower tile.
Something to consider for the Voices of Duke Health podcast, maybe: ‘An oasis of calm’: Quakers broadcast 30 minutes of silence
Morning walk on my land before work. Found this snake under an old tent.
This looks ominous.
Submitting some last receipts for 2017 health care reimbursement account. Pearl Jam and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole have made it bearable.
Dinner question to my children: What’s the best thing that happened to you this week? Each answered with what they’d done with friends this week. Very nice.
Made my annual batch of grenadine (pomegranate syrup) tonight. Recipe here and Clover Club cocktail essay (with mention of my syrup) by Michael Ruhlman here
