Halloween 2017
Had to tune out the news and politics this morning. Headed to Gray Squirrel for coffee. Listened to Texas country by David Touchton. On way to work, cranked up the spry Ancient Airs and Dances – strings, oboe, flute, and bassoon – by Respighi.
Speaking at a conference in Dallas next Saturday, then driving to Austin to spend a couple of days with my brothers. Wonder if there’s a chance I can join @ryan on a run or buy @manton a cup of coffee to thank him for micro.blog.
Papaya with lime, so good. Eager to taste it again on Paama next summer. Just hot cell phone numbers for our family there, and will call tomorrow to begin planning for our trip.
A truck and a personalized plate to reference the single vehicle that was on Paama island during our time as Peace Corps Volunteers.
Little Anna now has a driver’s license. w00t
Spent a fabulous 24 hours on Manhattan. Much to write about on my long-form blog.
Whale cloud through the moon roof.
Baked a boule per Michael Ruhlman’s bread baking app.
Food-truck Cuban food, good Belgian-style beer, delicious peach pie, Texas rock-n-roll by a guitarist from Statesville, NC. Just another fun summer evening in Saxahapaw.
Minutes after posting a blog post about how much I love Cleveland, I get a parking ticket because I stupidly trusted the City parking lot attendee and parked in a loading zone to run into buy beer at Great Lakes Brewing. Let my guard down and I was played for 25 bucks.
Can’t get back into the U.S.A. because immigration and customs at Charlotte international airport doesn’t open until 1 p.m. This after our flight yesterday was canceled because plane needed new brakes.
95° in Chapel Hill. Another work day at the house, patio demolition and yard cleanup and more. Eager to live up here one day soon and enjoy the 4 acres of woods.
Back at my desk at Duke Dept of Medicine, after last week’s fun family reunion in Tennessee. Played soccer yesterday, had 2 toes broken. Won’t be able to take my daily walk across campus.
Final night of the family reunion, potluck at our cabin. Bob and Claire Gadbois are giving their presentation about solar eclipses - they’ve seen 4, and will be in Wyoming for the next in August. I’ll be in Aunt Linda’s yard in South Carolina for totality.
The family reunion has been fun, filled with conversations and activities, with many old memories now joined with new remembrances. Sure, one uncle broke a tooth, one brother smashed another’s bumper, other moments of tension were lamentable, but overall this has been a blast.
Uncle Larry and Uncle Michael charting our next hike. Gorgeous weather today, and thousands of people in the park. Thank you, American taxpayers.
Hiking with the family in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Road tripping to a big family reunion. Listened to the really good Magic Show episode of This American Life. Picnic lunch at Catawba County rest stop.
